I chose Lose Yourself by Eminem because it’s always been my pump song. I played it out loud before I had to sit in front of a panel for an interview, and it gave me so much confidence. I also play it in my head whenever I’m on the radio and know emergency radio traffic is about to kick off.
The chorus’s line, “The moment, you own it, you better never let it go,” continually reminds me that so many are depending on me to do my job right. I need to step it up despite my doubts, exhaustion, hunger, or anything else telling me I’m in over my head.
The only thing in the song I would change is the “he” to “she,” because there are so many more women in police communications.
